Many widely used substances can result in food becoming tainted. In February 2008 a large number of food products containing salmon were recalled because of diesel contamination. The analysis that prompted the recall was carried out here using a highly sensitive method utilising solid phase micro extraction and analysis by gas chromatography- mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The use of duterated internal standards allows for quantification at low levels. The analysis is both sensitive and specific allowing individual compounds to be detected.
