West Yorkshire Analytical Services are an Official Food and Feed Control Laboratory which provides a high quality analytical, advisory and consultancy service to both public and private sectors. There are about 24 such laboratories in the UK, generally headed by a Public Analyst. More information on these laboratories and the work of Public Analysts can be found on the website of the Association of Public Analysts.
The organisation has a wide range of experience in diverse areas including food and drink, environmental monitoring, animal feeds and toxicology. A high quality service is provided and the laboratory holds UKAS accreditation in a number of areas of work.
It is housed in purpose-built laboratories at the Headquarters of West Yorkshire Joint Services), officially opened by Suzi Leather, then the Deputy Chair of the Food Standards Agency on the 1st May 2001. It has been a part of the Royal Society of Chemistry Partnership Programme since early 2011 and was the first Public Analyst Laboratory in England to do so.

Individual laboratories are fitted to a high standard and include two dedicated sample preparation rooms, cold stores, general laboratories, a toxicology laboratory and specialist instrument laboratories for spectroscopy, gas chromatography, high-performance liquid chromatography, proximate analysis and bio-chemical techniques.
Work is undertaken for a large number of private clients ranging from one-off analysis to large on-going quality assurance programmes. Statutory Public Analyst and Agricultural Analyst appointments are held on behalf of Bradford, Calderdale, Kirklees, Leeds, Wakefield and other authorities throughout and beyond the region.
Analytical results are only part of the service provided, which can include advice on sampling protocols, interpretation of results in a legal context, impartial advice and an expert witness service.
Senior staff at West Yorkshire Analytical Services have contacts in other Public Analyst laboratories with different specialisms and have access to professional directories and other reference sources. We are often able to suggest where specialist services may be obtained. This service is provided free to the public and businesses of West Yorkshire.
